Aluminum Time Capsules

Aluminum Time Capsules

Creating a time capsule is a great solution to preserve history and give future generations an insight into what daily life was like at the time the capsule was created or buried. Time capsules are also a direct and personal way to preserve your legacy and be able to connect with future generations. However, you don’t want to choose a regular item like a wood or metal box without proper sealing and coating for you time capsule. Your items could be susceptible to water, wear and corrosion.

At Erie Landmark Company — a division of Paul W. Zimmerman Foundries — we have unique aluminum time capsules for cities and towns, government organizations, historical societies and schools and universities. These time capsule containers properly preserve your items so they can last for many generations without deterioration or intrusion. Our 1/8″ thick aluminum time capsules are suitable for burial or as an attractive display piece. When they are properly sealed, they resist moisture and air penetration, achieving an interior with balanced oxygen and moisture content.  Our aluminum time capsules are black powder coated to also protect against animal or insect intrusion, and they are designed for long-lasting strength and will not corrode over time.

Preparing Your Time Capsule

When gathering the items you want to include in your time capsule, consider who you’re expecting to open the time capsule and what message you hope to convey. Carefully choose the contents, adhering to a specific time, event, location or theme — tailoring the items to the personality of your community or organization. When packing the materials into your time capsule container, you’ll want to take every necessary precaution to ensure the items stay in good condition. With your new aluminum time capsule, Erie Landmark Company includes:

  • A moisture-absorbing desiccant package
  • Oxygen-absorbing package
  • A packet of archival clear bags
  • One package of acid-free paper
  • An 8″ x 8″ metal photo plate if desired

Before sealing your time capsule and after you’ve selected your personal theme, separate your items with the polyethylene bags. Ideal items for time capsules are typically manufactured items not made from rubber or plastics that can emit acid vapor. Exclude vegetation and plants, too. Remove any batteries from devices to avoid corrosion. For paper products, use pens, inks and markers that aren’t water-soluble and record messages on the acid-free paper — consider photocopying any newspaper on the acid-free paper to ensure it won’t deteriorate. Make sure not to fold any of the paper to avoid sharp creases.
